Professional Info

My name is Josh Lengel. I am currently 18 years old and living in Bonn, Germany. My father was American and my mother is German, so I was raised bilingually. I am in a gap year pursuing my artistic passions after having completed my high school diploma (the German Abitur) at the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium in Bonn.

Work experience

LeanIX Enterprise Architecture

In the summer of 2020, I interned at the company LeanIX. In the two weeks I spent there, I learned about DevOps and solidified my knowledge about cloud-based server-less programming.

University of Bonn – Theoretical Physics Department

I spent two weeks as part of a mandatory school internship at the theoretical physics faculty of the university of Bonn. During this time I learned how to use the Linux operating system and many programs used for simulating particle collisions. This was a great experience because I connected with the employees very well and learned a lot along the way.

Education

Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium (High School)

I decided to go to this school because it offers the IB diploma in addition to the German Abitur. Since my goal is to study at an international university after graduation, pursuing an international diploma like the IB will be very beneficial. I passed the German Abitur with a 1,0 (A/A+).

University of Bonn

To further challenge myself, I took two university courses in tenth grade. The first course I took was Algorithms and Programming, which introduced Java and Object-Oriented programming as well as common sorting and searching algorithms. I achieved a perfect score of 1.0 (on a scale of 1 to 4, according to the German system). The second course I took was Computational Intelligence, where I learnt about applied machine learning, image recognition and speech analysis. This course was relying on very advanced mathematics which I was happy to master. I achieved a score of 2.3 (about a B-).

Miscellaneous

Extracurricular Mathematics

To share my passion for mathematics, I volunteer to teach extracurricular mathematics to children in lower years at my school. This is an invigorating experience as it challenges my mathematical competences, as well as my ability to teach. It can be tough sometimes, but I enjoy working with the children very much.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, any kind of student-initiated extracurricular activities are temporarily on hold. I hope to continue soon when the restrictions are loosened.

Programming

Possibly my biggest passion is programming. I have been programming with MIT’s scratch since I was 10 years old. I became more serious about programming at the end of my seventh school year, when I started learning Java. I spent a lot of time coding very basic encoders and decoders and a variety of mini-games using the javax.swing library. I continued expanding my programming skills in the second half of my ninth school year, when I learned OpenGL and C++ (Unrelated) and started working on my first major project Block Game (See projects page). Throughout the next one and a half years, I acquired more knowledge on how to engineer larger projects which resulted in the other projects displayed on the projects page.
